Entonces me di cuenta, ¡Dios mío!

Dealing with Artificial Intelligence

Dealing with AI

AI IS A PLANTATION - algorithms are programed to take all the information you contribute into whatever internet program you are using and manage it without paying you for it (monetization on youtube is something else - don't confuse it) So, like the plantations that produced cotton from the enslavement of strong people and built a booming economy, Artificial Intelligence is really your intelligence and mine put together in files that the algorithm instantly reaches for and presents it without the limits of the human mind, which many times inhibits our ability to quickly retrieve from our personal memory.

You don't have to be so mystified by it. Rather think of how you will use it or inform it so that it has the best of human traits and not the worse. For example, the GPS picks up all of our contributions and satellite information and gives you the fastest route. The translation programs collect all the editing and corrections you are doing within it and store it as information. All of these programs are working with the information billions of people are packing in it, ordering it into bits of information that it can regurgitate to the next person that requires its services.

That is why Human-Created and organized intelligence (it's not artificial) test taking programs are now passing Bar Exams and other Professional certification exams - it's like if you were to take open book tests with all the information at your disposal. The difference now is who creates the algorithm that can take in the most information and give it back to the customer - you and me.

Artificial Intelligence is just that, INTELLIGENCE gathered from billions of unwitting contributors and it is overcoming individual human capacity because it is the collection of all human capacity, not just one individual’s. The algorithms which human beings have created makes AI into a plantation, where the program receives every piece of information and has access to it in an instant without the process of human memory. It collects all of your contributions, files it and benefits from it but never pays you for it. It is an “Hacienda,” a Plantation based on the use of our collective information.

As I was using one of the translation services that now exists on the internet I started making corrections to my document within the translation program as the program instructed me to do. Then I realized, oh my goodness! No wonder this thing gets better and better, we are all editing within this program and it is using all of our information to correct its gathered information. I simply stopped editing inside of the translation program I was using, thinking, why should I share my knowledge with this company for free? But now I am thinking, what if we all pack these AI bots with humanism, non-violence attitudes and expressions, practices of non-violent responses and planning and abhorrence for hoarding and violence? How about if we fill Artificial Intelligence with alternatives to greed and domination of others? What if in every interaction we have on the internet we express thoughts of SHARING?

Thanks-Giving and Retribution

If the “Thanks Giving” story goes - that the original peoples helped the newcomer (“illegal immigrant”) survive, it is only fitting that the newcomer Give Thanks: re-tribute; pay tribute to those who saved them. One way to do it is to re-distribute the wealth the newcomer has amassed thanks to the original peoples.

Then maybe, each year there should be a project - a political project, laws and budgets, orders of business, that follow the directives of First Nation thought and Practices, which respect each other’s ways of living together in this land mass we call the United States.

The fact is the “Indian” has given and continues to give. From the Original people, Benjamin Franklin took forms of sovereignty which formed the federal system of government we have today. Maslow, Rogers and so many other architects of modern Psychology learned their craft from careful study of indigenous people’s form of healthy living. Even in modern times, it was the Navajo who enabled “allied” victories over the German-Italian-Japanese aggression, which finally lead to the end of World War II. And as a society around the world, people are turning to the healthy practices of the original peoples because of their proven record that sharing is a good thing.

And the list goes on.

But instead of gratitude, what we as a nation have developed has been an abusive, genocidal relationship of taking from First Nation people. Instead of Thanks Giving, we continue to see thievery on the side of the newcomer, who thinks this land belongs to him, simply because he has the ability to kill you.

And now there are borders dividing original peoples and business ventures that extract the goodness of the land and fracture the earth; all against the advice of the original people.

So in your towns, counties, states, in the nation - let’s make laws and practice Thanks-Giving by recognizing and following the leadership of the communities we have relegated to the apartheid system called reservations (South African apartheid was based on the U.S. reservation system). Let’s listen, learn and respect their correct place of leadership.

This year we have the first Original Nations leader in Congress, who was just elected in Colorado. Let’s make that a tradition and elect more indigenous leaders every year until they have a truly representative place in Congress, the Senate, the Presidency of this nation where First Nation people belong.

Let us re-tribute First Nation peoples from the African Continent who were Kidnapped and forced to labor as part of the largest Human Trafficking Scheme the world has truly ever known. Let us abolish these useless borders that prohibit First Nation people from this continent from the ability to Migrate to and fro as we have done for millennia, but now (that we are called “immigrants”) are forbidden to do so. Why not erase these fictitious borders - the European Union has done it and they are flourishing.

See, the current U.S. capitalist plan simply does not work, but for a few, who "hold-up" in a crack house of leisure, at the expense of the many, whose lands are fractured, waters poisoned and health destroyed by extractive powers or military powers or drug powers - all in control of that leisurely group of crack addicts (or gold addicts).

It will always be up to the rest of us, who are looking for systems that put people and the earth before profits to continue to organize ways of living practiced by those who saved these newcomers from assured death in the first place (well not really the first place, because this invasion is only 526 years young and whose end time has come).

Be a little thankful this thanks-giving and do more than eating turkey and having a break with your family and friends (which is a good thing). Recognize we owe the “Indian” our very existence and act accordingly.

All Respect, Relatives

Save San Francisco for and from the 99% - Salvar a San Francisco para y desde el 99%
Imagine a City-wide alliance - a People's campaign across political parties, religious and ethnic identities; across sectors to save san francisco for and from the 99%.
As we enter the electoral political sphere, it is important to keep in mind what our goal is, as with everything we do. Healing is the goal. Our system in this country and in our city is completely out of balance, dangerous and harmful to us and to others. The murder of our children by Police and the sale of our seniors' homes from under them by unethical investors, the kicking out of working class families from the city is more of the same that we are seeing across the country and around the world. We see it in Detroit, Ohio. Brazil was an embarrassing example as the world saw thousands of families being displaced from the Horto Favela during the Olympics.
How do we organize to turn this belligerent age of displacement into an age of mutual respect and sharing? In San Francisco groups like Cultural Action Network (CAN) has been doing a great job of identifying projects aimed at displacing community and offering creative solutions to keep the base of working people in the mission district. We are running the Francisco Herrera for Supervisor of District 11 campaign to have one more progressive member of the board of supervisors and create enough power to force City Hall executives to listen to our communities before they listen and do the bidding for corporations.
We are creating a plan and a vision for San Francisco, as people around the country and around the world are also developing people powered campaigns and people-first policies and budgetary practices. So let's continue putting people first in everything we do, because we are the People. There is no free market But there can be a Fair Market place and it can only happen with your participation and mine. Whether you are in a community organization, a neighborhood association, a political party, a revolutionary organization, a church, a combination of all of these or running for a political position, let the logic of putting people first be the center of your objectives. Defend Dignity. Protect the Common Well-being: Healing

(Please scroll down for English version)

On the fourth of July, 1776, a group of revolutionaries declared their independence from king George of England. A war was fought and a nation liberated itself from the yoke of a monarchy. Since then the social sickness of monarchy, oligarchy, domination continues to creep in to control the life of people who refuse to be dominated and struggle each day for our freedom in the simplest of forms to be able to eat, have a dignified roof, relations and actions of quality; in other words Life. But the predatory spirit of 'ol king George continues to want to dominate this time by corporations. Millions of us celebrate this historic declaration with fireworks, songs, barbecues, drinks, not realizing our responsibility to not become that very oppressor we from whom we declared independence.

It is true that most people in the U.S. don't realize we have become one of the most violent forces against democracy in the world simply by the use of our tax dollars (example the thousands of deaths perpetrated by Hilary Clinton, Barak Obama administration in the Coup against Honduras, central america). It is true that maany millions of people don't realize that we have contributed with and have financed so many atrocities like the Coup in Honduras through the last two centuries, starting with that psychotic practice called Slavery up to last month's political coup in Brazil. But not being aware does not erase the damage done. It does not take away our responsibility of following through with that Declaration of Independence from Monarchies, Oligarchies and today Toxic Corporations, like Coca Cola in Latin America, Nike in South Asia, The Banksters like Chase and so many more. If we are to celebrate the revolution that brought us independence, Let's continue that Spirit today.

Through the music, poetry, organizing, actions so many of us have produced during our life and particularly that of this project HONOR MIGRANTE, Fuerz de la Raiz, children's music, etc we continue to promote a life of quality where people share the goodness of the earth, listen to the heart of the earth and act for the common good. We recommit on this day of this nation's celebration of independence in favor of every nation's struggle for independence and human goodness. Let's get on with it folks, together we make the difference!!!

In commemoration of the 4 of July, let's make the effort to create the SEPARATION OF CORPORATION AND STATE. And we can start by moving to ammend the constitution declaring Corporations are not human beings or persons. Corporations have reached the level of corruption and as much a poison to democracy that organized religion reached when the policies of Separation of Church and State were forced to come about. If we are committed to revolution and the fourth of July, Independence, cooperation among nations, freedom of choice, freedom of movement, caring for each other, Let's move to amend, let's create the Separation of Corporation and State. Happy barbecues and Tamales everyone!!!

Amor Sin Papeles
AMOR SIN PAPELES (LOVE WITHOUT DOCUMENTS english follows spanish:)

¡¡Amor Sin Papeles!!
I composed Amor Sin Papeles after a priest friend asked me to sing for a clandestine wedding. In the U.S. in 1994 we saw the barbarous act of the denial of licenses to working people who contribute generously to this nation, simply because their immigration documents are not in order. Then, governor Pete Wilson, criminalized these working families, benefactors to this country, calling them "illegals" and denying them the participation in many activities of life, one of them being the possibility to obtain a marriage license at the county office.
Sometime later I bumped into a Rabi friend who told me "Fraancisco, I am holding clandestine weddings in my synagogue, outside of the law,.... because the county is not granting marriage licenses to folks without ID's and since folks without papers can't get an ID anymore, they are denied marriage license as well..... but I believe in God and no one si going to deny me the possibility of marrying them in our religious tradition, even without the permit of the city." Something similar then happened with another Imam friend who told me about the undocument members of his Mosque. By the time the Catholic came along with the invite to sing at that clandestine wedding I knew what was going on and wrote Amor Sin Papeles.

I wrote the song thinking of the words of Martyr Archbishop Oscar Romero of the Salvadoran Catholic Church who gave an example to the world, who said "No one has to honor an unjust law" and I rememberd my religiuos friends were doing just that, not collaborating, disobeing and unjust law. I thought, "how can we allow that racist elements interfere with the most intimate parts of our life? You don't play around with Love!" Love is stronger and it is God's will.

I mention this story because the same applies to our sisters and brothers from the transgender, queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual communities No one can judge that individual and intimate experience. It's interesting that in many indigenous first nation communities, people respect that experience; In the most communal societies, where community comes before the individual is where the individual is most respected (not always of course). When there is a balnce, there is respect. Respecting people of our communities means respecting each and all individuals. Given the massacre in Orlando Florida against our people of same sex orientation, be they lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, intersexual, queer, etc. who are not only denied papers (though after years of organizing and lobbying, the courts now recognize same sex marriages) but life itself, simply because a person driven by fear (homophobia), I want to therefore dedicate this song in Solidarity with these communities as well. As for the homophobic persons it has to be said that when you are afraid of something it is usually because you do not want to accept that something is part of you as well, part of your very person. Homophobic peopleare simply afraid to recognize the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersexual person within themselves. So, let's examine ourselves before we judge, speak, act. God made us in God's own image and likeness, this is what people of Jewish, Muslim, Christian faith are taught. And we believe God does not make mistakes. Ultimately we are called to Love.and that is what humanizes us and teaches us to be humble and joyful. In honor of all the victims and survivors - Amor Sin Papeles (Love without papers!)

Disarm HOMOPHOBIA
This recent massacre in Orlando Florida calls us to stand with Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual, Queer communities. Terrorism is created to traumatize and disperse people, prevent them from organizing and making change to improve the quality of our lives. The only antidote is Love, fearless love, organized love. Our commitment is to sabotage, subvert, starve this sickness clled homophobia at every corner. And at the same time nourish openness and respect for differences, create strategies of love and celebrat collaboration in our diversities. This is real life. Homophobia is a tragic and dehumanizing mental and spiritual sickness. Disarm Homophobia Now!!

¡¡ADELANTE RAZA!!

Nuevo Sol (New Sun) composed to celebrate the emerging voice and stuggle of migrant people who beautify wherever we go and settle, facing grave racism and xenophobia represented in anti-immigrant laws and violence. Irresponsible so called: "free trade" policies and imperialism, force people to leave their countries and regions. The song is also written in the spirit of that great freedom hymn of the African American tradition: "Lift Every Voice" written to celebrate the liberation from slavery that people fought for and gained after the civil war. We are one race, the Human Race, with the example of African Americans who became heroes, like Vicente Guerrero, hero of the liberation war in Mexico (that is why we have the state of Guerrero in Mexico) and other heroes throughout Latin America, the U.S. and Canada. So today, we are that New Sun that emerges, the working people migrating from one place to another enriching the places where we settle. Keep Organizing and making a difference.

Track 6 Pelotita Blanca - We don't Play Golf Here
Saul Landau made a wonderful documentary titled "We Don't Play Golf Here" in which one of the stories is that of the community of Tepoztlán Mexcio, which rose up to defend their land when a group of investors from the U.S. and Mexico wanted to desecrate their cemetary in order to put a golf course on the site. People froze the town and refused to let anyone in the town to prevent the disrespectful act. The song "Pelotita Blanca" was born from this struggle. The documentary goes on to describe other instances of community organizing for quality of life issues and defense of the environment, against free trade policies by the government in power presently in México. In writing the song for the film I was asking the question who is crazy? the people who want to defend their land, or a group of "investors" who have no understanding of human priorities. In the song I am interested in exploring the images of people working together for change - giving others the example they can get organized.

When my cousin Zujeila and her boyfriend Renato got married I took the oportunity of writing a song that would remember the ranch that was her home and fields that gave birth to my mother and father in the Valley divided by an international border, Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico and Calexico California of the Imperial Valley where my father and I were born. That is where the song comes from playing with the love that comes from a couple that met in their youth and grows up together. I am very moved by the love between Zujeila and Renato, for their youthful, rock n roll spirit with a social conscience and care for mother nature and the environment. Their commitment to their family and humanity inspires me. I love them very much and very happy to have written a song that can remind me of that great old canal that gave so much life to so many people in what had been a desert, giving life to a great mass of people in a valley divided by war Mexicali and the Imperial Valley.

Palomita de la Ciudad - Immigrants pay a hig price to enrich this country and their own.
There is a beautiful story about how this song was written. Palomita de la ciudad (track 4) started as a verse that came to me as I was taking my daughter to her pre-school class, wlaking with her on my shoulders and looked into the sky as a dove passed us overhead. Many stories came to my mind instantly, of sufferings that people will never tell their relatives as they send money back home; struggles and the truly high cost of coming to the U,S. Who, in all their dignity will send money home and say "here are your 500 dollars, and by the way I only eat once a day," or "i sleep under a bridge." Their focus is on their purpose for being here: the well being of their family and the education of their children. So everyone simply says there is the money, I am doing just fine. That is why the verse came to me, "little dove, you who flies through the city, go tell them, warn them of the reality they will face when they come to work here.." we won't. I took the verse to the Day Laborer Chorus we had formed and people identified instantly with the message and began a series of stories, shared among the group of how, in contrast to telling what people live here in the states, people send beautiful pictures, posing in front of fancy cars and bulldings, sending these amazing pictures, giving a very different impression of reality. Everyone contributed a verse, a line based on the stories: "My brother used to love to stand next to fancy cars and trucks and take pictures, which he sent back home," said Teresa, one of the members, "in the mean time we slept in a closet that during the day was used as storage for garbage cans."
Immigrant is a tremendous asset to this country. The Social Security Administration has an account called the "Suspense File" where all funds coming from S.S. numbers that don't match with the name are filed. in 2008 alone the total contributed by no-match workers was 56 billion dollars. At the same time that year only Latin American workers sent 48 billion dollars to their country of origin. Imagine the inmigrant: on the one side her armed strecthed contributing trillions of dollars in taxes to the Social Security Office, which they will never be able to claim, as they pay taxes with an unofficial social security number. The other arm stretched out lifting their own country of origin. You have a simbol of crucifiction or of resurection, depending on how you focus your perspective. In the midst of this contradiction Palomita de la Ciudad was written with the contribution of all the members of the Day Labor Chorus of San Francisco on a spring evening of 2003. It was a beautil process of collaboration, amidst laughter and tears and great deal of solidarity.

. . yo no puedo."

Pueblo Pueblo Started as an opening refrain for concerts....
I always like to open a concert with a sort of musical "roll call." If I know folks at the concert or if there is a specific theme, I like to focus on that, giving the audience a focus, a comon vision; a kind of - Why are we here today? Who are we? That is how Pueblo Pueblo started. I would always sing the refrain and improvise the verses. In the mean time we sat down to lay the song and I focused on setting lyrics that would stick. Images came to mind: the folks selling fruit at the offramps of Los Angeles; People crossing the desert of the Imperial Valley, working the flower harvests in Encinitas, bringing love at the neighborhoods throughout the land... Oh Pueblo Pueblo - Ah Canta tu Cancion

Song #2 of Honor Migrante "Carrito de Fruta" ((fruit Cart) presents the dignity of working people in the presence fruit vendors who spend their days on the streets of the cities and towns, many time, evading the "authorities," because they don't have a sellers permit. In the case of those who do have a seller's permit, they still spend countless hours dealing with county offices and police agencies making sure their stand or cart complies with codes of the city and county. On most ocassions we see the seller in the streets but not their children, spouse, family and friends who get up at 3 or 4 in the morning to prepare the food, or articles that will be sold during the day.
The song was written as music for the docu-drama by Pepe Urquijo titled: "Fruit of Labor," 2003 www.pepelicula.com in which the day laborer (fruit vendor) opens the doors to his struggles to maintain dignity. I wrote it almost on the spot and was never fully satisfied with it. Before recording it I called one of my closest writing colleagues, Martín Llamas "El Pájaro" and in 2009 we gave it its final polishing to record the vocal track. It is always a pleasure to work with Martín.
The migrant honors the land where she or he steps.

The new cd HONOR MIGRANTE is a collection of songs that honors the life and contribution of migrant people. Nuevo Sol, the first track, is more of a hymn, in the same way that the legendary "Lift Every Voice," honors the struggle of African American people's struggle for freedom from slavery. It is a proclamation that the new sun is risign and we have learned from the darkness of being forced to live under the earth (in hiding), learning from the torrents of attacks that have made us stronger. Nuevo Sol honors those who continue emerging, proving to be an example of dignity, learning from every experience and flourishing - despite the harshness of racism.
